Our Church History
The Scipio Methodist Episcopal Church began in the Assembly Hall of the Scipio School Building, on February 1, 1914. Rev. Whitsitt of Franklin, IN organized the church with sixteen charter members.
The following summer, over thirty more were baptized in the Wyaloosing Creek near Milholland Ford. Soon after, fund-raising for a new building began. The building was completed in 1916. Shortly after, a Ladies Aid Society was organized, and through their fundraising efforts, they were able to earn $1,355.48 to pay toward the indebtedness of the church, and on July 31, 1921, the church observed a mortgage burning.
Ironically, in 1945 the Scipio School burned and during the years 1946 thru 1949 the church was used for temporary classrooms. In 1972 it was decided a new church building was needed. On May 21, 1978, Rev. Vern Doles and the building committee broke ground, and in June 1979 the congregation moved into the new building.
In 2014, the Scipio United Methodist Church celebrated its 100th year of service to the community. Though much has changed over the last 100 years, the Scipio United Methodist Church remains a place where people rally together, lifting one another in the affirmation of our faith in Jesus Christ.
